As the population grows, so does the level of wastewater across the world. Whilst mother nature is brilliant at processing wastewater, it has become too much for her to handle.
What is wastewater?
Wastewater, also known as sewage, is water that has been polluted by human use or rain water run off. With most people already having an idea of what sewage is, it might surprise some people that it includes all water that is used in everyday life such as sink water, bath water, water from a washing machine among many other things.
Why is wastewater treatment important in Northern Ireland?
Wastewater is very toxic and poses a threat to the whole ecosystem, not just us humans. Wastewater poses significant health risks with over 1.9 million deaths every year. Left untreated, wastewater will begin to pollute our oceans, seas and important water sources, not only affecting the wildlife and plants that live in our water, but spreading out and causing catastrophe across our land and air as well. With Northern Ireland having an expansive agriculture industry and culture, it is important that we tackle this problem effectively and efficiently.
How does wastewater treatment work in Northern Ireland?
- Stored at a local wastewater treatment plant, the wastewater will separate, with semi-solid sludge lying at the bottom of the tank and scum floating on top.
- The first step known as “Primary Treatment”, filters the water for the first time. This removes around 60% of suspended solids from the wastewater.
- A “Secondary Treatment” filters the wastewater again, this removes more than 90% of suspended solids from the water.
- The plant returns the filtered water back into the ecosystem for mother nature to finish up the job.
